About

Dr. Bruce Singh is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, currently engaged in private practice within the Professorial Unit at The Melbourne Clinic. He also holds the position of Director of postgraduate training in Psychiatry at Melbourne Health. Prior to his retirement in 2013, Dr. Singh served as Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Medicine Dentistry & Health Sciences Projects) at the University of Melbourne.  

 Previously, he held various esteemed positions including Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Dentistry & Health Sciences for a duration of three years. Prior to that, he was the Cato Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, along with serving as the Clinical Director of North Western Mental Health for a period of 17 years.  

 Dr. Singh has also held a professorial role at Monash University, a senior lectureship at the University of Newcastle, and has been recognized as an NH&MRC Travelling Fellow in the Clinical Sciences, having completed fellowships in Rochester, NY, and London. He received his medical and psychiatric training at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney after graduating from the University of Sydney.  

 Throughout his career, he has been honoured with various accolades including the Centenary Medal of Federation and the Victorian Minister for Health’s Award for Contribution to Mental Healthcare in Victoria. Recently, he retired from his position as Foundation Chair of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to psychiatric education and the advancement of clinical mental health services, Dr. Singh was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2007. The University of Melbourne further acknowledged his distinguished service to the institution and the field of Psychiatry by awarding him an Honorary Doctorate of Medical Science in 2014.  

 Moreover, in 2020, he received the prestigious Medal of Honour, the highest accolade bestowed by the Royal Australian and NZ College of Psychiatrists, following his College Citation in 2017.
