Joint Medical Examinations (JMEs)
MEDirect is a TAC preferred provider of Joint Medical Examinations (JMEs), offering fast, fair, and legally compliant assessments for transport accident-related injuries. JMEs are a specific type of Independent Medical Examination (IME) jointly requested by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the client’s legal representatives.
Our national panel of suitably qualified medical specialists is trained in impairment assessment, including accredited use of AMA Guides, and experienced in managing the unique requirements of the JME process under Victorian law.
What is a Joint Medical Examination?
A Joint Medical Examination is an independent medical assessment that both the TAC and the claimant’s lawyer agree to request. JMEs are used to evaluate injuries sustained in transport accidents, with the goal of improving efficiency, reducing duplication, and streamlining the claims process.
This process was introduced as part of the Transport Accident Act 1986 amendments in November 2013 to enhance client experience and reduce the need for multiple IMEs.
Key Features of a JME
- Requested jointly by TAC and the claimant’s lawyer
- Requires prior approval from TAC before proceeding
- Conducted by independent specialists with appropriate qualifications
- Impairment assessments must be performed by AMA-accredited practitioners
- Final reports are released simultaneously to both parties
JMEs are designed to provide a single, shared opinion that can be used to assess entitlements such as no-fault benefits or impairment compensation.

- TAC-appointed and preferred provider for JMEs
- Extensive network of medical experts across all major specialties
- Examiners accredited in the use of AMA Guides for impairment
